Tomorrow We Fly to Chicago

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

This is probably gonna be the last post we will be writing from Singapore for around a year as we are going to begin our epic one-year non-stop work-travel adventure tomorrow when we fly to Chicago. We will be flying through Japan with a 6 hour stop in Tokyo. All in all, the trip across the pond will take nearly 24h!

Initially we wanted to go through Hong Kong but we couldn’t get any seats as they were fully booked and it was even very difficult to get a flight through Japan, with our travel agent having to pull a few strings to get us off waiting list and into a seat!

Our luggage consists of one big suitcase for check-in and two carry-on bags. One is a Pacsafe backpack which is slash and snatch proof with a metal netting in the cloth (see our full review of the backpack here). And of course we’re carrying our trusty video cam so we can bring you all the juicy videos of what we do and see along the way!

What to Take When Traveling Around the World?

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

This is a question we are constantly asking ourselves and working out answers for. In our travels we will encounter everything from tropical weather to below freezing, tropical downpour to heavy snows. How can we travel light and still have all the necessary clothes for these different weather conditions and locations?

Raincoats - Borneo

This is how we looked when we forgot to pack proper raincoats!

The disposable raincoats we were wearing didn’t seem to work. It’s better to dispose them BEFORE wearing ;)

Oh yeah, the tired look on our faces, that’s from the 6am flight not the rain :)

Another thing we have to take into consideration is what equipment to bring with us. We’ve already outlined most of our mobile office in this post. But since then we’ve realized we need another notebook computer.

We want something very light (as close to 1kg as possible), but we also don’t want to spend too much on it since we’ll be staying in so many places that the possibility of it getting stolen increases. We’ve seen some nice ones under 1kg, but the keyboard and screen are too small for Grace to work effectively on them.

Many people have suggested we take backpacks with us instead of suitcases. That seems like a good idea, but to fit clothes for cold and hot weather into a couple of backpacks and make sure that the one Grace is carrying doesn’t break her back is a lot more complicated ;)

So what are we taking with us and how are we going to pack it? Well, we’re still not sure yet, we’re definitely taking a couple of warm jackets each, some all weather pants, and plenty of other clothes in between, and we’ll make sure to post a video of our beautifully packed suitcases… or not :D

Oh yes, if you’ve read this far then I’ll remind you that you can stand a chance to win a magnificent Sony Photo Printer, by just subscribing to this site by email. When you subscribe you will receive each of our posts by email, complete with any pictures they include :)

Grace on Channel NewsAsia

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Today at 9:30pm Singapore/Hong Kong time, Grace was featured on Channel NewsAsia in a programme called “Cents & Sensibilities” about currency trading. And while they didn’t mention Worldiki in the show, they did mention Grace is going to be traveling around the world while continuing to trade currencies.

Channel NewsAsia Cents & Sensibilities - 27Nov2007

Apart from that, today we confirmed our round-the-world tickets,  so we should be flying off to San Francisco on the 29th of December :D

In the meantime, we’ve got a lot of footage from our trips throughout Asia that I need to edit and put together into interesting video blogs for Worldiki.tv. I’m also reading up on filming and video editing as it is something I haven’t done that much of, but will need to do every day for the next year!

A great resource I found are the free BBC online courses on filming at: http://www.bbctraining.com/onlineCourses.asp

Appearing in Singapore Press

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

As our regular readers will know, we’re back in Singapore for a bit while we get everything ready for our year-long non-stop round-the-world trip. A lot of dashes in that last sentence ;) just think of them as connecting our destinations ;)

Anyway, back to the subject on hand, Worldiki got its first main-stream media attention on Tuesday the 20th of November when it was featured in the Digital Life of The Straits Times which is the main newspaper in Singapore. Also today, Grace went to film a segment about trading that should appear soon in Channel NewsAsia (the major news channel of Singapore and parts of Asia). And while this segment isn’t about our travels, it is about trading which is what Grace does.

So even though we’re back “home” for a few weeks we’re busy busy busy with everything from media, travel planning, and of course, our day-to-day work.

I’ll keep this post short and let you all get back to your Thanksgiving dinners :) Look out for our video on elephant riding tomorrow!
