Quito is wonderful, but it is way up high above everything and I wouldn't think of it as a base for exploring the Amazon River basin... which is way down under everything. It is a place to begin a trip to the roof of the world, starting from Otovalo, or take a bus down the mountains to Guayaquil which is like a Somerset Maugham novel.

My favorite memories of Quito are the llamas wandering the streets and geraniums (pelargoniums) as big as trees. Just remember not to eat anything raw that you don't peel yourself. You wouldn't be the first to get a very nasty tummy thing that could mean the end of your trip and a flight home.

I do envy you Petra.

Many people looking on the Buddha statue find it a source of happiness and serenity. It is a symbol of the end of suffering and true peace. It has a great symbolism and history.
